Essaouira, also known as Mogador, is a lovely city on Morocco’s western coast, and Morocco travel vacations offers great Essaouira excursions for all tourists. It’s a tranquil little town that has grown in popularity as a weekend getaway from Marrakech. Guided Information about the History of Essaouira

As implied by its name, Essaouira derives from the Arabic word suirah, which translates as “beautifully designed.” The city’s remarkably regular structure dates all the way back to 1760, when a French slave of Sultan Sidi Mohammed proposed the current building design. During Roman times, the neighboring “purple” islands of Mogador (also known as Essaouira in ancient times) supplied color for the imperial robe. Ptolemy wore this cloak during his meeting with Caligula, and it served as a pretext for the murder of the Moorish king, who believed he was dressed better than him.

Morocco desert excursions departing from Essaouira

The urban core is centered on a busy fishing harbor.

Although Essaouira lacks traditional tourist attractions, tourism has replaced sardine fishing as the city’s economic backbone.

Scala (Skala) and Sidi Mohammed (rue Derb Laalouj; open: 8.30-18.00; closed: Tue, entrance fee) are two of the area’s most prominent attractions.

Visitors often spend the majority of their time at the city’s bazaars, admiring the work of local craftsmen.

The Diabate (Diabat) sand dunes stretched south of the port and were once home to a Jimi Hendrix-led hippie colony.

Today’s beach has been designated as their destination by windsurfing aficionados.

Though Essaouira lacks well-known landmarks and activities, the city has a distinct ambiance and is perfect for those seeking to unwind on the Atlantic coast while strolling around the port and fortifications. Additionally, the cats are not getting tired of being caressed, despite the fact that they have been given a lot of fish.

Essaouira Attractions

Medina

There is nothing to lose in Essaouira’s medina (in comparison to Fez’s mammoth size). In 2001, UNESCO recognized the historic city’s walls as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This location was used to film sequences for television programs such as “Kingdom of Heaven” and “Game of Thrones.”

Structures resembling fortresses, such as city gateways

Surrounding this old city are magnificent instances of European fortress building in North Africa. We were unable to proceed upstairs due to maintenance work.

Port

The port of Essaouira is a hive of activity, with blue boats, birds, and fishermen bringing in their fresh catches. It’s a little filthy around here, and I’m not interested in purchasing fish given the location. However, it’s an excellent place for a walk and picture ops!

Citadel

The medina, port, and neighboring island of Essaouira may all be viewed from a low vantage point after ascending the medina’s hill. While we were there, everything was walled off and being repaired. Entry is ten dirhams. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 17:30 p.m.

Essaouira has a variety of markets.

At the old town’s many markets, which include a fish market, a spice market, and a jewelry market, visitors may buy everything from argan oil and other cosmetics to teapots and ceramics.

The Beach of Essaouira

Due to the water being frigid year-round, the adjacent beach is seldom crowded. If you want to walk, however, there is a beautiful and long embankment equipped with the essential facilities. While the locals prefer to play football, visitors enjoy sunbathing on the long beach. It’s a colossal hobby around here. Windsurfing and kitesurfing are also popular on the beach due to the constant breeze.

This neighborhood is home to some of the city’s finest eateries.

The city’s center square is densely packed with restaurants and cafés, and the port area is home to a slew of outstanding open-air seafood shacks. The Ave Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah, which runs through the medina, is lined with inexpensive fast food restaurants. I’ve included another list of cafés and restaurants that I recommend below. Restaurant Keltoum offers delectable genuine Moroccan food at an affordable price. Vague Bleu is a small café serving affordable Italian cuisine and fish such as halibut. Taros, a tavern on the main square with a cool terrace and a panoramic view, charges a premium for drinks. Baladin’s spaghetti is somewhat more costly than the national average. The restaurant is called La Découverte.

What is the best way to travel to Essaouira?

You can travel about the city via bus, which departs from one of three distinct terminals. The main one is located outside of town and is where the majority of buses leave, while the other two are run by CTM and Supratours. We chose the last option since it is the closest to the medina and embankment…… While the CTM and Supratours buses are somewhat more expensive, they offer superior service. The following table summarizes the CTM bus prices to and from Essaouira, Morocco, from a variety of places offering Essaouira excursions.

ESSAOUIRA, MOROCCO: THE BEST THINGS TO DO

THE RAMPARTS OF ESSAOUIRA

The ramparts of Essaouira look out over the city’s medina and the Atlantic Ocean. In the 1760s, French military architect Theodore Cornut built these essaouira walls to protect the port from pirates. The style was inspired by Saint Malo, France. Classic film buffs may remember them from Orson Welles’ 1952 film Othello, which included them in the opening credits. The opening sequence of the film, which depicts Iago imprisoned in a cage above the cliffs, was filmed here.

The beautiful skala, a fortress built for military purposes, encircles the waterfront ramparts. At one end of the fishing port stands the Skala of the Port. On the other side, the Skala of the City has a row of 19 bronze cannons along the seawall. Both the medina and the ocean are visible from the ramparts. The coastline and arcades below, which were formerly military stores, are often lined with stalls of artists and craftspeople.

There are two ways to ascend the ramparts. To begin, you may enter via the port, which is situated just before the main entrance. At the time of our last check, the entrance fee was 60 dirham. If you go down to the port, though, you’ll come upon a stairway heading up to the end. If you enter here, our Essaouira tours, you may walk around the rampart and see the port and the old Portuguese and Spanish cannons from above.

Take in the BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS OF ESSAOUIRA

Essaouira’s west coast location is unbeatable for seeing the sun set into the ocean. Twilight occurs when the sun begins to drop over the Atlantic Ocean, creating a golden glow over the golden beaches of North Carolina’s coast. In the fading light, fishing boats and birds are silhouetted. Watch the sun set from the ramparts of Place Moulay Hassan or the apex of the Taros Bar with the finest essaouira excursions.

Cooking regional food is an excellent way to maximize your vacation rental. A culinary tour of Essaouira’s finest eateries. L’Atelier Madada offers half-day courses taught by a local chef in both French and English. The day begins with an introduction to Moroccan mint tea, followed by culinary instruction and a tour to the market’s spice souks.

Traditional tajines are available, as well as other delicacies including pastilla (a pie composed of many layers of puff pastry), zaalouk (an eggplant salad), and briouates (filled triangular pastries).
