Surfers from all over the globe flock to this “City of the Wind.” Essaouira has been home to many civilisations – notably the Portuguese conquest, which influenced much of the town’s architecture – yet it remains a tiny hamlet steeped in history. According to legend, when the third of them was finished, the sultan had his architect’s eyes removed in order to prevent him from building another more magnificent tower elsewhere. No journey to the city is complete without paying a visit to the city’s UNESCO-listed medina and Djemaa-el-Fna, a remarkable gathering and market area. In the evening, spend the night in Marrakech.
